A heavier new chapter rooted in Louisiana blues

Eric Johanson returns on October 16, 2026, with his new album The Open Bayou, marking another step forward for one of the most distinctive guitarists and songwriters on the contemporary blues-rock scene.

The album is also the first release on Johanson’s newly established Levee Ward Records, giving him the freedom to take his music further while remaining firmly connected to the Louisiana roots that have always shaped his sound.

On The Open Bayou, Johanson does not move away from the blues. Instead, he expands its boundaries. The new material combines powerful guitar riffs, fuzz-drenched tones, expressive slide guitar and hypnotic grooves with the raw energy and emotional depth that have become central to his music.

There are moments where the songs move into more atmospheric and psychedelic territory, but the foundation remains unmistakably blues and rock — direct, muscular and driven by the chemistry of a real power trio.

That chemistry was an important part of the recording process. Johanson entered the studio with bassist Will Repholz and drummer Jake Gartenstein, capturing the basic tracks in just three days while the band was on tour. The intention was to preserve the immediacy, tension and spontaneity of a live performance rather than polish away the character of the musicians playing together in the room.

Johanson produced the album himself and worked closely on the mixing and mastering with Bill Skibbe, whose credits include Jack White, The Raconteurs, The Kills and Jon Spencer.

The first taste of the album, “Shake the Fever,” was released on August 28. Built around a massive fuzz guitar riff and a tightly locked rhythm section, the track provides a strong indication of where The Open Bayou is heading. Heavy and groove-driven at its core, it also opens into more spacious and dreamlike passages, showing the contrast and dynamics Johanson explores throughout the record.

The Open Bayou arrives after a particularly strong period in Johanson’s career. His 2023 album The Deep And The Dirty reached No. 1 on the Billboard Blues Albums Chart, while 2025’s Live In Mississippi became his sixth Top 10 entry on the Billboard blues charts.

His guitar work has also received considerable recognition. Guitar Player included him among its “25 Best New Blues Guitarists,” while Total Guitar named him among its “Top 50 Blues Guitarists of All Time.”

With The Open Bayou, Eric Johanson appears less interested in redefining himself than in finding out just how far his own version of the blues can travel. The Louisiana roots remain clearly visible, but around them the sound has become heavier, deeper and more adventurous.

For listeners who appreciate blues that respects its origins without being confined by them, The Open Bayou looks set to be one of the most interesting releases of the year.
