In Concert captures Blood, Sweat & Tears in a period of renewal, with the return of charismatic singer David Clayton-Thomas to the band. The recording, made in 1975 and released in 1976, highlights a band that still possesses impressive stage energy, impeccable technique and one of the best brass bands in the history of jazz-rock.
From the first notes of “Spinning Wheel”, it becomes clear that Clayton-Thomas remains in excellent vocal condition. His characteristically husky, passionate performance combines ideally with the dynamic brass, creating a sound that balances rock, soul, jazz and funk. The band does not simply reproduce the studio performances, they expand them with improvisations and elaborate orchestrations, offering a more lively and organic experience.
The repertoire includes classic songs such as “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy”, “Lucretia MacEvil” and “And When I Die”, which acquire new momentum thanks to extensive instrumental interventions. The musicians demonstrate a high level of skill, especially in the wind solos, without losing the coherence of the compositions.
The production, although reflecting the possibilities of a live recording of the 1970s, maintains satisfactory clarity and successfully conveys the atmosphere of the concert. The audience is heard discreetly, allowing the music to remain the center of attention.
The album is considered as historic as the band’s top studio works and is an excellent document of their stage power. For those who love jazz-rock, rich brass arrangements and the unique voice of David Clayton-Thomas, In Concert is a particularly enjoyable listen that proves why Blood, Sweat & Tears are among the pioneers of the genre.
