Argus is rightly considered Wishbone Ash’s masterpiece and one of the most important albums of British rock of the early 1970s. It was released in 1972 and uniquely combined hard rock, folk and progressive rock elements, creating a sound that later influenced bands such as Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden.
What makes Argus special is the legendary guitar duo of Andy Powell and Ted Turner. Their harmonic lines do not function simply as solo and accompaniment, but as two voices constantly talking to each other. The result is a sound that is at once epic, melodic and atmospheric.
The songs on the album are almost all classics. “Time Was” opens the album with impressive development, moving from acoustic parts to electric outbursts. “Sometime World” and “Blowin’ Free” combine lyricism and energy, while the second side of the album culminates with “The King Will Come”, “Warrior” and “Throw Down the Sword”, tracks that exude a medieval, almost mythological feel.
Although often classified as progressive rock, Argus avoids the excessive complexity that characterized other prog bands of the era. It does not rely on an abundance of keyboards or technically ostentatious passages, on the contrary, it wins the listener over with its melody, atmosphere and exceptional coherence.
The influence of the album was enormous. Steve Harris has stated that anyone who wants to understand the early guitar harmonies of Iron Maiden must listen to Argus.
Even today, many fans of prog and classic rock consider it not only Wishbone Ash’s best work but also one of the greatest albums of the 70s. In the music community, it is often referred to as a “hidden gem” or one of the most underrated classic albums of the genre.
Argus is an album that combines technical excellence, inspiration and timelessness. A landmark work that remains equally compelling more than fifty years after its release.
From this exceptional album, we will hear the track “Sometime World”.
