Supertramp is one of the few pure-blooded bands of the seventies that manage to combine a completely personal style with moments of remarkable compositional and interpretative work.

Their music, simple in its basis, is presented in an extremely artistic manner, which is mainly based on the amazing skill of the members and the wonderful orchestrations of Hodgson-Davis, the central core of the group. If you add to the above their amazing flexibility, as they move with great precision in various genres of music, sometimes coloring the corresponding compositions like a pure-blooded hard rock group and sometimes moving with grace and sensitivity in the harmonies, you have a fairly complete picture of Supertramp.

In Crime of the Century, released in September 1974, all the aforementioned elements that make up Supertramp’s music seem to have found their right recipe. The harmonious marriage that makes this album seem like the exquisite musical blend, the culmination of the group’s creative inspiration.

The first side begins with the eerie sounds that constitute the intro of “School”, a full-blown track that fully highlights the capabilities of the group members. The second song, “Slow Hard Rock”, with the familiar piano intro and immediately after the taste of the brass, of “Bloody Well Right”.

The second side begins with “Dreamer”, a song in the familiar context that its creators have accustomed us to and closes with the eponymous “Crime of the Century”, a track that I select, and which is nothing more than the condensed melodic idea that wanders throughout the album. Sometimes hard, sometimes fragile, epic, amazingly executed, with intelligent orchestral passages, it is the ideal final ornament of this wonderful album.
