Tripping The Live Fantastic is Paul McCartney’s first official solo live album and the first release of live material from the 1976 Wings Over America live set. Recorded during Paul McCartney’s World Tour (1989–1990), it was released in early November 1990 as a triple LP, double cassette and double CD. Tripping the Live Fantastic peaked at number 17 in the UK and number 26 in the US. An abridged version of the album, titled Tripping the Live Fantastic: Highlights!, was released in late November.
A documentary of the Paul McCartney World Tour, McCartney’s first series of solo concerts, Tripping the Live Fantastic covers his entire musical career from Beatles songs to his then-most recent album, Flowers In The Dirt, while also including some unique covers. Scattered throughout are occasional soundcheck recordings.
The title is a reference to the phrase “Tripping The Light Fantastic”, meaning to dance or move to musical accompaniment, originally from John Milton’s poem L’Allegro.
Although he had reversed the end credits of the Lennon–McCartney songs on Wings Over America in 1976, McCartney left the end credits for the Beatles songs on Tripping The Live Fantastic in their original form.
Several songs from the tour were released as b-sides singles and were not included on the album: the single “Birthday” contained “Good Day Sunshine”, “P.S. Love Me Do” and “Let ‘Em In”, “The Long And Winding Road” contained “C Moon” and “Mull of Kintyre”, and “All My Trials” additionally contained a medley of “Strawberry Fields Forever”, “Help!” and “Give Peace a Chance”.
Three weeks after the album’s release, an abridged edition entitled Tripping the Live Fantastic: Highlights! was released as a 17-track CD and 12-track LP.
Featuring only the highlights of the concert, this set is notable for the exclusive inclusion of “All My Trials”, which was not on the original release. However, on the US version of the album the track was replaced by “Put It There”.
While not charting in the UK at all, Tripping The Live Fantastic: Highlights! peaked at number 141 in the US on the Billboard 200 and, proving its enduring sales success, went platinum. The original set peaked at number 26 and failed to go gold.
From this excellent triple live album I select the track “Jet” from the Wembley concert on 17.01.1990.
