Sleeping While the River Runs is a masterpiece in its own right. It’s a collaboration between noted Chicago vocalist Gerald “Soulkeeper” McClendon, brilliant songwriter/ guitarist Steve Bramer and an ensemble of blues veterans called Mother Blues. Engineered and mentored by veteran blues studio man Jerry Soto who worked with the likes of Buddy Guy, Eddy Clearwater, and others, the mastery of songwriting craft, musical arranging, and vocal delivery put this one on the list of albums worthy of rediscovery. … it pulses from first cut to the last… Highlights include the should-a-been-a-hit title song backed by a soulful gospel chorus, what should be a pop/ jazz/R&B standard Keep You from Harm, and the bluesy Leaves Tremble on the Tree. “I’m proud of this album,” offered McClendon. “There is such variety on it and it spotlights many of my varying vocal approaches.” … A press of “repeat” rewards anyone listening to the album.

Every form of American music from Jazz to Hip Hop, and even modern country, is a
stepchild of the blues. Blues is the mother of them all. Only southern gospel is as
elemental.
Most seminal blues styled singers burned brightly and flamed out. Legends like Bessie
Smith, Bobby Blue Bland, B.B. and Albert King may have passed, but their influence
carries on. A select few contemporary artists authentically carry that torch, and they
could be a vanishing breed.
One modern singer still draws from that mother lode. Gerald McClendon is often
described as one of the most captivating voices in Chicago. He’s known as the “soul
keeper,” one of the most powerful singers on the scene. Gerald has appeared with
Chicago blues staples from Pinetop Perkins and Otis Clay to Billy Branch.
