Live And Let Live was the first live album by 10cc, released in the autumn of 1977. It was recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in London between 18 and 20 June 1977 and at the Manchester Apollo, Manchester between 16 and 17 July 1977.
The album featured the new line-up of 10cc following the departure of Kevin Godley and Lol Creme in 1976. The trio of Eric Stewart, Graham Gouldman and Paul Burgess, who had recorded 10cc’s most recent album, Deceptive Bends in 1977, which was released earlier that year, were joined by Rick Fenn, Stuart Tosh and Tony O’Malley, the latter also taking on vocals on “Art For Art’s Sake”.
The tour was in support of their latest album Deceptive Bends, and Live And Let Live featured tracks from that album, with the exception of “I Bought A Flat Guitar Tutor”, with the rest of the tracklisting being based mainly on Stewart/Gouldman compositions.
The album was a success, reaching the Top 10 in Norway and Sweden and No. 14 in the UK charts, later going gold. The song “The Wall Street Shuffle” and the side-splitter “You Got A Cold” were released as singles in the US, but failed to chart. “I’m Mandy Fly Me” was released as a single in Australia.
Some of Deceptive Bends’ melodic tracks are given a new lease of life on this live album, such as “Honeymoon With B Troop” which sounds quite slick and “You Got A Cold”, which counters the overly thin studio overproduction and with the double drums of Stuart Tosh and Paul Burgess, turns into a real funky gem. There are other impressive moments scattered throughout, such as Stewart’s vocal turn on “People In Love”, which is a previously buried basic line from “Ships Don’t Disappear In The Night (Do They?)”, which comes to the fore on a purely acoustic level with Stewart having some entertaining audience talk along the way.
The performances, stripped of some of the studio excesses, are all very good and older material like “Waterfall”, one of the first and best songs 10cc ever recorded, and “You’ve Got A Cold” are played much harder and more focused than the original recordings, which sounds quite good. The extended band, with drummers Paul Burgess and Stuart Tosh, guitarist Rick Fenn and keyboardist Tony O’Malley, sounded surprisingly impressive, giving this live set a lot of power.
From this live album we will hear the amazing “Waterfall”.
